NORTH CONWAY — After an opening night loss to eventual finalist Plymouth, the Suncook Valley 10U Cal Ripken team was able to come up with a couple of wins during the District Eight tournament in North Conway over the weekend.

The tourney began with a 6-4 loss to Plymouth on Friday, June 22.

On Saturday, June 23, the team returned to North Conway and picked up a 12-2 win over Farmington to even its record at 1-1.

A second game was scheduled for later on Saturday against Carroll County. After a lengthy rain delay, the two teams took the field and got only an inning in the books when the rain came again, washing out the chance to play.

That meant Suncook had three games on Sunday. First up was an 11-6 win over Kingswood, which was followed by a 10-0 loss to MWV, keeping the record even at 2-2.

The final game was the makeup game with Carroll County. The two teams battled back and forth through four innings, with Suncook Valley taking a 9-8 lead after four.

After Suncook Valley pitcher Calvin Michael got a pair of strikeouts in the top of the fifth and also got a nice play from third baseman Devon Bedell, Suncook took control, adding four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Bedell led off the inning with an inside the park home run to dead center for a 10-8 lead. One out later, Jeff Wagner beat out an infield hit and Chris Daniels drew a walk. Ryker Burke then reached on an error to drive home another run and a throwing error at the plate allowed another run to score, pushing the lead to 12-8. Adrian Siravo then worked a walk and Michael reached on an error to plate another run.

Carroll County threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases, but a heads-up play by Bedell gunned down a runner trying to score on a grounder to third and Suncook got out of the inning and the game with no further damage and the 13-8 win, giving the team a winning record for the tournament.

The Suncook Valley roster includes Devon Bedell, Nolan Sykes, Adrian Siravo, Chris Daniels, Jeff Wagner, Ryker Burke, Joel White, Heydon Drew, Jagger Bernier, Travis Cote, Nick Rowe and Calvin Michael. The team is coached by Chip Wagner and assistants John Daniels and Ken Michael.
