The fifth grade class celebrated their 2012 DARE graduation Tuesday, April 17 in the Middle School gym, along with their families, teachers and members of the Gilford Police Department.

One-by-one, 69 students from three classes received their DARE certificates after learning some of the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and to "Just say no" if they are ever offered any potentially harmful substances.

DARE Instructors and School Resource Officers (SRO) Holly Harris and Kelly Stiegler reflected on their time with students.

"This is the best part of my job," said Harris, who has been a DARE instructor for seven years.

Stiegler, who is on her second year as a DARE instructor, said she hoped students put their drug awareness knowledge to good use.

Over the past few years, the two instructors encouraged students to make posters or videos for their DARE projects instead of the traditional essay.

The DARE Instructors acknowledged three students for their DARE projects; Nick Perry for his poster, Caden Remillard for his essay and Malak Rabuck for her video. The Instructors also recognized Cecilia Zarella as the overall best DARE student for her classroom participation.

Gilford Police Chief Kevin Keenan, who was a DARE instructor about 10 years ago, told students that police officers are always there for them whenever they are in need. He also encouraged students to keep in touch with their SRO's.

Middle School Principal Marcia Ross spoke highly of the SRO and DARE programs for their benefit to students safety and education.

"One of the best things to happen to public schools over the past few years is the introduction of the School Resource Officer program," said Ross, thanking Officer Harris and Stiegler. "We honor and give praise to those who chose to serve and protect our community."
