Sperazzo named new Assistant Principal at GHS

April 04, 2012
Gilford School Board members voted to appoint Interim Gilford Middle School Assistant Principal Anthony Sperazzo as the new high school assistant principal at their meeting Monday, April 2.

Based on a recommendation by GHS Principal Elect Peter Sawyer and a nomination by Superintended Kent Hemingway, Sperazzo will be the new GHS Assistant Principal for the 2012-2013 school year.

"It's an exiting opportunity," said Sperazzo. "I taught most of those students in middle school, and I've wanted to work with high school students."

Sperazzo said he has been with GMS for a total of eight years — seven as the physical education teacher and coach, and one as the interim assistant principal.

According to Hemingway, Sperazzo completed his Master's in Supervision in 2009, and is currently pursuing his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study at Plymouth State University.

"He will be an important leader in our schools in this new role," said Hemingway.

In other business, Hemingway presented the 2012 Gilford Champion for Children award to Michele Welch for her work supporting children and families in Gilford.

"This is such an honor," said Welch. "I love this community, and I love the schools."

Welch joins previous award recipients School Board member Sue Allen and Lisa Buckley.

For student recognition, Hemingway invited the Gilford FIRST robotics team to talk about their upcoming trip to the International Championship Game in St. Louis.

Team mentors thanked their students for their hard work and dedication, and were hopeful that they would be able to bring home the Championship Cup. Mentor Jackie Drever said the team was grateful for the community support, and announced that the team raised about $2,700 from their spaghetti dinner, and were close to their goal of funding the trip for the 17 students willing to participate.

School Board members unanimously approved the trip, and wished the team luck as they go off to compete against 340 other teams from around the world.

"It has been a joy to watch this program progress from the beginning," said Board member Paul Blandford.

Finally, with Kurt Webber and Sue Allen each reelected for three-year terms, School Board members elected Allen as the new Vice Chair, Blandford as the new Chair and Rae Mellow-Andrews as the secretary.
