MA's Smith, I-L's Boquist lead Nordic teams in Sandwich

SANDWICH The local Nordic ski season continued for Inter-Lakes High School and Moultonboro Academy on Jan. 19, as the teams competed in a meet that also included Derryfield, Hopkinton and Kennett at the Sandwich Fairgrounds under sunny skies.

The I-L boys' team had the best finish of the day for the locals, as the Lakers totaled 366 points to finish second to Kennett, which led the way with 386 points. Hopkinton took third (359) while MA was fourth on the afternoon (356).

While Kennett's Torin Laliberte was the clear winner with a time of 12 minutes, 11 seconds, local skiers occupied the next two spots. MA junior Joe Smith was second overall in 13:01 while Ryan Boquist of Inter-Lakes was third with a time of 13:12.

I-L's Bryce Frizzell captured eighth on the day (14:17) to help pace the Lakers, while MA's Nate Bennett was right behind in ninth (14:21).

The Lakers used plenty of depth on the day to put together the second-place team finish, as John Findlay was 13th, and Derek Chase, Robbie Wood and Bob Euiler grabbed 17th, 18th and 19th. The top four finishers on each team accounted for the scoring. MA's other scorers on the day were Nick Bennett (22nd) and TJ Marchand (26th).

Hopkinton claimed the top spot on the girls' side, as the team posted a score of 383 points. Derryfield was second with 367 while MA (358) and I-L (355) were third and fourth.

Brianna McKinley of MA was the top local finisher, as the senior earned 96 points with a fifth-place performance in 15:30. Hannah Benson of Kennett was first overall with a time of 13:14.

Annie Wilcox and Braelynne Morrow of Inter-Lakes both finished in the top 10 for the Lakers, as Wilcox was ninth overall (16:38) and Morrow was right behind in 10th (16:53). The duo combined for 183 points.

MA's Jerrica Davy was the second Panther to cross the line on the day, as she was 12th overall in 17:14. Fellow Panthers Dana Jackson (15th) and Gabby Smith (16th) were the other two MA scorers.

I-L's Chelsea Colby was the final Laker to score as she was 18th in 18:37, while Kalee Tinker had a top 25 finish with a 23rd overall. MA's Aberdeen Bird (22nd), Elaine Velie (24th) and Charlotte Chico (25th) were also in the top 25.

The middle school girls' race had a local flavor in Sandwich as well, with MA's Madison Greene finishing sixth overall in 18:44. I-L grabbed the next five spots in a row, as Katie Hambrook, Bridie O'Connell, Danielle Boucher, Kenzi Giroux and Katie Gallagher were seventh through 11th.

In the boys' middle school race, Sam Seeley was first for the locals in 21st overall, while MA's Jacob Baker was the top Panther in 28th.
