Berlin to vote on abolishing wards

January 04, 2012
BERLIN –In addition to voting in the state's presidential primary, city voters will be asked to abolish the city's four wards on Tuesday's primary election. Mayor Paul Grenier and City Council passed a change in the city charter that must be approved by the voters to deal with the redistricting challenges of creating four equally populated wards.

Proponents argue that it will bring unity and possibly draw more candidates to run for city positions. Opponents say it would weaken local community representation and break a long-held municipal tradition. This vote may be a test of the sway of the newly reelected mayor as he begins his second term with a council of his own liking. Grenier campaigned hard for councilors that agreed with his positions and was critical of those that did not.
