Huntsman confirmed for Littleton Chamber dinner

Annual event set for Jan. 6 at Mount Washington Resort

December 14, 2011
LITTLETON — In keeping with a tradition of seeking out notable speakers, the Littleton Area Chamber of Commerce has confirmed Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman Jr. as the speaker for its 90th annual dinner at the Mount Washington Hotel.

Huntsman has been steadfastly courting New Hampshire ahead of the state's Jan. 10 primary, though his polling numbers still fall far behind rivals Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney. Nationally, Huntsman ranks as one of the hopefuls with the least support at 1 percent to 2 percent, while in New Hampshire, he's in fourth place with 9 percent to 11 percent.

The former governor of Utah and U.S. ambassador to China last visited the Littleton area in early June, making purchases at Chutters and Just L on Main Street.

"America's mayor" Rudy Giuliani spoke at the Chamber's 2007 dinner shortly before he officially began vying for the GOP nomination, and Syfy "Ghost Hunters" Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson were guests of the 2009 event.

The father of seven children with wife Mary Kaye, Huntsman has a varied career in business, politics and international affairs.

Before being the U.S. Ambassador to China from 2009 to this year, the 51-year-old served as Utah's governor from 2005 to 2009 and as one of two deputy United States Trade Representatives from 2001 to 2003 during President George Bush's administration. He got his start in politics when he worked as a staff assistant to former President Ronald Reagan during the late 1980s, and he was later named U.S. Ambassador to Singapore under former President George H.W. Bush — one of the youngest to serve in that position.

His business experience comes from helping with the chemical manufacturing and marketing company, Huntsman Corp., which his father, Jon Huntsman Sr. founded.

The annual event will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at the Mount Washington Hotel, with a silent auction and business expo, followed by dinner from 5 to 11 p.m. The reservation deadline is Jan. 2. Contact Dawn Berg of Cherry Blossom Floral at 444-1015 to donate items for the auction. Call the Chamber at 444-6561 for more information.
