Good night for Gilford

Soccer boys win thriller, volleyball girls advance to finals

November 01, 2011
DERRY — Tuesday was a good day for the Gilford Eagles.

The Golden Eagles boys' soccer team hosted Fall Mountain in the Division III quarterfinals at Kingswood Regional High School in Wolfeboro. The game was postponed from Sunday due to the snow storm, but had to be moved to the neutral site because of the field conditions in Gilford.

The two teams exchanged goals in the first half and went to the break tied at one and battled through the second half and through two overtimes still tied at one. The game went to penalty kicks, where Gilford pulled out a 4-3 win to advance to the Division III semifinals.

The Golden Eagles will take on the Cinderella team of the Division III tournament, the Raymond Rams, at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, at Bill Ball Stadium on the campus of Exeter High School.

Meanwhile, to the south at Derry's Pinkerton Academy, the Gilford volleyball team was battling with defending champion Oyster River. The Bobcats were the last team to beat the Golden Eagles, doing so in last year's finals.

This time, however, the Golden Eagles were the ones celebrating a win, as coach Joan Forge's troops took a 3-1 win over the Bobcats.

The Golden Eagles rallied for a 26-24 win in game one and then led the entire way through game two for a 25-18 win. The Bobcats picked up a 25-16 win in the third game, but Gilford came rallying back and took game four by a 25-18 score to win the match and advance to the finals.

The Golden Eagles will now put their undefeated season to the final test when they take on second-seeded St. Thomas at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Pinkerton Academy.
