Softball tournament and dinner to raise funds for Wakefield family

October 13, 2011
WAKEFIELD — A community is rallying behind a Wakefield couple, Sam and Jenica Morrill, as their newborn daughter is putting up a good fight at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

On Oct. 2, Jenica went into labor three and a half months early with the couple's twin daughters, Alexia and Izabella. Sadly, Alexia did not survive the birth. Izabella, weighing in less than two pounds at birth, is a patient at the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit where she is expected to be for the next several months.

Sam is captain at Wakefield Fire Rescue. As soon as the news broke, members of that fire department as well as departments across Maine and New Hampshire began organizing an event and offering their support to the family.

This Saturday, Oct. 15, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Paul School in Wakefield, the fire department is hosting a softball tournament. Eleven teams have paid their $150 entry fee and will be competing in the all-day tournament. According to Selectman Kenny Paul, at least half a dozen teams had to be turned away due to the sun setting early this time of year. The public is welcome to attend the tournament and cheer on their favorite team. There will be food and baked goods for sale during the event as well as raffles.

Beginning at 5 p.m. that evening, there will be a benefit turkey dinner with all the fixings at the Wakefield Fire Station. Dinner is $10 for adults and $7 for children and senior citizens with all proceeds from this event benefitting the Morrill's as well. There will also be a bake sale and raffles during the dinner event.

Raffle prize donations are still being graciously accepted. To make a prize donation or for more information, contact the fire station at 522-8336, Kenny Paul at 973-6076, or Steve Petsche at 387-1706.

Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation directly to the Morrill Family Fund can do so at any branch of Profile Bank or mail checks to Profile Bank, 65 Meadow Street, Sanbornville, NH 03872, Attn: Morrill Family Fund.
