Friends of Newfound Football hosting road race Aug. 27

August 15, 2011
BRISTOL — On Saturday, Aug. 27, during Bristol's annual Old Home Day Celebration, the Friends of Newfound Football will be holding a 5K Fun Run/Walk. The race will be held at 8:30 a.m., starting at Kelley Park on North Main Street in Bristol.

The pre-registration fee for the race is $18, and registration the day of the race is $25. Registration will start at 8 a.m. Please make all checks payable to Newfound Football Field Construction because all proceeds will be going towards the Newfound Football Field construction project.

According to Bryan L. Richardson, Sr., President of Friends of Newfound Football, in the spring of 2002, the Newfound Regional School District gave the private Newfound football team permission to play for Newfound Regional High School as a club football team. In August of 2002 the NRHS football team was granted permission to practice on a field on the grounds of the school; this field would eventually be the very spot where the NRHS football field would be built.

For the next six years, construction on a field for the Newfound football team had not been started. In 2008, the Friends of Newfound Football appeared before the Newfound Area School Board asking permission to develop the former practice area into a game field. The NASB granted their permission with the stipulation that all of the funds needed to complete this project would come from Friends of Newfound Football. At that time, J.P. Morrison of Morrison Construction volunteered to construct this field for very little compensation.

According to Pete Cofran, Athletic Director at NRHS, the football field is "tentatively" scheduled to open for the first home game in the fall of 2012. On July 6, the leveling of the construction area and the spreading of topsoil was complete. On July 8, hydro seed was put down on the site. The field will need to be re-hydro seeded several more times before the field will be ready for the players to start using the field.

Even though there has been tremendous progress already made more funds will need to be raised in order to complete the project. Funds will be needed to include amenities to the field, including stands, bathrooms, scoreboards, etc.
