June 27, 2011WOLFEBORO — The Suncook Valley 10U team had a great start to the District Eight Cal Ripken tournament in Wolfeboro this weekend.
The boys won all four of their games over the weekend to lead the division heading to the final round robin contests, which were held after deadline Monday.
The first game of the tournament came on Saturday morning against Farmington and it was nip and tuck the whole way. However, Suncook plated one run in the fourth to take the 1-0 win and Bryan Delaney and Connor Blandini combined on the shutout on the mound.
Suncook got a double play to get Delaney out of trouble in the first inning, but the Valley kids couldn't capitalize on a base hit from Dillon McCann in the bottom of the first.
Delaney struck out the side in the second, but again Suncook couldn't take advantage of a leadoff walk from Casey Clark in the bottom of the inning.
Clark through out a runner trying to steal in the third inning, but again, a hit from Travis Stockman and a walk to Blandini went to waste.
After Delaney pitched around a walk in the top of the fourth, the tie was finally broken in the bottom of the inning.
Delaney led off with a base hit and took second on an error. After a fly ball to center, Delaney raced home on a bunt hit off the bat of Casey Fleming. The ball was thrown away, allowing Delaney to score.
Delaney got two more strikeouts in the fifth and Blandini entered and struck out the side in the sixth for the save, giving Suncook a 1-0 win.
The team turned around later in the afternoon and defeated MWV by an 11-7 score.
Suncook took on Kingswood on Sunday morning and got off to a quick start, plating five runs in the first on the way to a 12-0 win.
Blandini led off with a base hit and stole second. Back-to-back hits by McCann and Delaney produced one run and a hit from Fleming produced another. A wild pitch allowed a third run to score and after Jack Lehoullier walked, Jacob Gensen was hit by a pitch and a Matt Place grounder plated another run. Place got caught in a rundown between first and second, allowing enough time for another run to cross and it stood 5-0 before Kingswood batted.
Fleming got the start on the hill and gave up two walks in the first but got out of the jam with a strikeout. Suncook got a leadoff hit from Kyle Roukey in the second, but couldn't score. Fleming sent Kingswood down in order in the second and in the third, the Suncook bats returned. Delaney doubled and Clark beat out an infield hit. A base hit from Fleming plated a run and a wild pitch brought home another. Gensen had a base hit to bring home another run for an 8-0 lead.
Fleming sent Kingswood down in order in the third as well and Suncook plated four more runs in the fourth. Blandini had a triple and stole home on a walk to McCann. Delaney had a base hit and a double from Clark scored both runners. Fleming's sacrifice grounder moved runners up and another run scored on a throwing error for a 12-0 lead.
Kingswood got its first hit of the game in the fourth, but Clark threw the runner out stealing and Fleming got a strikeout to end the 12-0 win.
Suncook then moved on to play Plymouth later in the day and had a tough contest, eventually coming out with a 7-5 win.
