Relay for life a success at Gorham Common

June 23, 2011
GORHAM — The 14th American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Berlin/Gorham took place at the Gorham common on Friday, successfully raising $84,000 for the cause to fight cancer. The total amount raised by the community since the relay started in 1998 in Berlin/Gorham is $650,000. It was the first time the event was held at the Common, and it fell on the 175th anniversary of Gorham since it was incorporated in 1986. About 50 cancer survivors registered, there were about 300 volunteers, and about 350 participants consisting of businesses, organizations and clubs in the area that were split into 20 teams.

"Through their hard work in preparing for the event, and by spending hours walking for the cause, area residents certainly did their part to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays," said Allison White, volunteer co-chair for the 2011 Relay For Life.

The top individual fundraisers were Lucinda Bragg from Shelburne, who raised more than $3,350.00, Gina Saladino, of Gorham, who raised $1,440.00, and Regina Saucier of Bethel, ME, who raised $1,357.99.00 in donations.

Androscoggin Valley Hospital was the top fundraising team who raised an astonishing $19,558.56. Storyland was the second highest fundraising team raising $8,057.70, and the third highest fundraising team was an outstanding effort by North Country Dental, raising $6,477.99.

"More than 7,800 people in New Hampshire will face a cancer diagnosis this year," said White. "And, it's critical that we come together during Relay to help the American Cancer Society achieve its mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back."

A meeting for the wrap-up of Fridays' relay and for planning for next years' event will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 27 at the Gorham Learning Center, Gorham. The meeting is open to anybody. For more information contact, Kathy Metz at 603-356-3719 or Kathy.metz@cancer.org.
