OSSIPEE— Ossipee Valley Rotary Club honored the 2011 Student Citizens of the Year at their meeting Monday night, June 13, at Rivers Edge Tavern at Indian Mound Golf Course in Center Ossipee.

The awards went to Effingham Elementary sixth grader Ali Caulkins and Freedom Elementary sixth grader Becka Lees.

Lees' teacher, Todd Giles, and Caulkins' teacher, Nancy Perkins, were asked to say a few words about what made these students their picks for this year's award. Giles said of Lees that she is kind, respectful, nice and always willing to help her fellow students even if that means volunteering during her recess. He said she works hard and is a natural born leader. "I am very proud to have known her," he added.

Of Caulkins, Perkins said she is a helper in the classroom, hardworking, athletic, and a great storyteller who spends hours volunteering at the Mineral Springs nursing home in North Conway where her mother works. "You couldn't ask for a nicer girl and I am so proud of her," said Perkins.

Rotary Club president Jayne Britton said, "Sometimes we have to ask ourselves, where did I get the motivation to become civic-minded…was it a special teacher, our parents, grandparent that made us want to give back?" For her, she said, it was her grandmother who made her realize that giving back is very important. She said to Caulkins and Lees that she hopes they can convey the spirit of giving that they have to their classmates and, as they get older, to their community. "There is a joy in giving that only giving can give," she added.

The Student Citizens of the Year are selected by school staff from those schools in the area that chose to participate after being asked to do so by the Ossipee Valley Rotary Club. The winners were awarded certificates, Club sweatshirts, handmade bags by Gretchen Large in Effingham, a pendant from JC Penney, $50 savings bonds, Yankee Smokehouse gift certificates, and a Rivers Edge gift certificate courtesy of Exit Realty Leaders.
