MANCHESTER — The Kingswood girls' lacrosse team never trailed in its 9-8 semifinal win over Kearsarge on Sunday in Manchester, but the Cougars certainly made things plenty interesting for the Knights.

Kingswood's Kelsey Rodgers scored the game's first goal 3:14 into the game and Kingswood never looked back, leaping out to a 3-0 lead, holding a 5-3 lead at halftime and holding on for the 9-8 win.

However, playing down a player for the last four minutes, the Kearsarge girls didn't cave in and scored a shorthanded goal with 2:59 to go to cut Kingswood's lead to 8-7.

Kingswood senior Caitlyn Brooks scored what would prove to be a very important insurance goal with 43 seconds on the clock, as she switched from her natural left hand to the right in front of the net and sliced the ball past the Cougar keeper.

Kearsarge scored another shorthanded tally with 30 seconds to go, but the Knights controlled the final few seconds and held on for the win, propelling the girls to Kingswood's first-ever trip to the finals.

"The quicker you get the lead, the better," coach Ali Cushing said of her team's fast start. "When preparing for the zone defense, the key is, outside the obvious, the zone can't set up if we get a fast break."

Rodgers scored three goals, Erin Maguire and Molly Gwizdala each had two and Megan Lander and Brooks tallied one apiece. Kellie Lander finished with 11 saves in the Kingswood net.

The Knights will take on top-seeded Plymouth on Wednesday, June 8, at 7 p.m. at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester in the Division III finals.
