Hemingway to serve as new superintendent

March 09, 2011
After months of discussion and intensive interviews, the Gilford School Board has announced that Kent Hemingway will replace current Superintendent Paul DeMinico in his retirement, and serve as the new Superintendent of Schools starting July 1.

Hemingway, the current Assistant Superintendent of Schools for SAU 54 in Rochester, was one of three finalists running for the DeMinico's position at Gilford School District.

Gilford Elementary School Principal Dr. John "Jack" Billings and Thomas Christensen, Superintendent of Schools for Shamong Township Public Schools, in Shamong, N.J., were two of the three remaining candidates in the superintendent search process.

While the School Board planned to announce the new Superintendent by April 1, the board instead shared this information during Monday evening's meeting.

Chairman of the School Board Kurt Webber made a motion at the beginning of the meeting to hire Hemingway as the new Superintendent of Schools.

DeMinico plans to retire this June, while Hemingway's position will go into effect in July, to prepare for the approaching school year.

"This was a difficult choice we had to make," said Webber. "We had three outstanding candidates. They were three excellent finalists, but in the end, we decided on Kent."

Hemingway and his wife were also present in the crowd during the School Board meeting Monday evening, and he stood as his name was recognized.

He has devoted more than 30 years to education, and received his bachelor of arts in Elementary Education from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass. in 1976. He later received his masters in Education Administration from Plymouth State College in 1983, and his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Education Leadership at Plymouth State University in 2003.

He has also taken on various other positions over the years prior to his assistant superintendent of schools position, from teacher to assistant principal at several schools throughout New England.

Hemingway currently resides in Tamworth with his wife and family.
