WHITEFIELD — She's back. Joanne Jacaruso has confirmed that she's is purchasing the former Inn at Whitefield, a place that she owned and operated for a decade before selling it in 2004. "I love the place," she explained "and couldn't stand looking at it (empty) anymore."

The dining and lodging establishment on Route 3 adjacent to the Weathervane Theatre has been closed and for sale for much of the past six years. The idea of reopening the inn was planted last summer, while Jacaruso was performing in a play at the Weathervane and finally this winter she contacted Whitefield Real Estate broker Frank Mai, who is handling the sale, and worked out the details. A tentative closing date is set for April 1.

If everything works according to plan, Jacaruso will be open for business in mid-May and will offer upscale casual dining and bar with regular music. She has no immediate plans to open the overnight lodging. She has not decided whether she'll stay open through Christmas, but she said, the inn will not be open for the entire winter.

Jacaruso purchased the inn sight-unseen after reading an advertisement in Yankee Magazine in 1994. She revived the once popular Play House Motor Inn, which had long been connected to the venerable summer stock theatre. The difference between now and then is stark, she said. "I know exactly what I'm getting into," she added.
