New owners sought for Mocha Rizing
January 12, 2011
SANDWICH — The owners of Mocha Rizing are plotting a course out west, but not before putting the store into capable hands.
Co-owner Nancy Papp said her family is planning to move to Sedona, Ariz. Mocha Rizing is now for sale, but Papp said it will not close and she is seeking a buyer to keep the store going.
Mocha Rizing has been open for four years and has been a social hub of activity in Center Sandwich. Several local organizations hold their meetings there, and it has been visited by political candidates greeting prospective voters.
Papp said her family, including husband and co-owner Shawn Papp, wanted a change of pace and is setting its sights on Arizona.
"We're going to keep the coffee hot and the lights on and do our thing," Papp said. "It's been a good run; we really have no regrets."
Papp said out in Arizona, she and her husband want to do the same work they have done here.
"I think Shawn will probably do the landscaping and outdoor living space. I think I'll probably find somebody who runs a coffee shop and needs help," Papp said.
Word has spread around the community of the Papps' plans.
"(People are) mostly excited for us and our adventure and sad that we won't be here anymore," Papp said. "I keep steering the conversation back to it will stay open and we will find somebody great to continue what we've started here. I can pretty much (say) we are not going to close."
Papp said there have been a few interested buyers. Above all, the owners are looking for a buyer who will keep the store open year round and build social capital. She also said they have loved working with Fair Trade beans and supporting local farmers.
"I think we're going to hold out and try to find the right match," Papp said.
Though they are moving out west, the Papps have savored their time in Sandwich and being a part of the Sandwich community.
"We've had nothing but awesomeness. Sandwich Central School has been wonderful. We'd recommend this lifestyle to anyone, just a wonderful place to live," Papp said. Anyone interested in purchasing Mocha Rizing is asked to call Susie Yeager of the Bean Group directly at 677-2032 or at her office at 677-0001.
