The winter sports season has arrived

REGION — As December rolls around, so does the start of the winter sports seasons at the area high schools.

The defending Class I champion girls' basketball team starts off the winter action at Kennett, as the girls will head to Wolfeboro to take on county rival Kingswood on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 6:30 p.m. The team's first home game is set for Friday, Dec. 17, when St. Thomas comes to town for a 6:30 p.m. visit. Also on the docket for the Lady Eagles this year are Manchester West, Bedford, Berlin and the usual suspects from Oyster River, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Laconia and Coe-Brown, among others.

Snow conditions permitting, the Kennett cross-country ski team, for the first time in decades not under the direction of Chuck Broomhall, will open the season with a meet at Great Glen Trails on Dec. 14. The team will host meets at Whitaker Woods on Jan. 14, Jan. 26 and Feb. 3. Kennett will also host the Division II State Meet on Feb. 9.

Last year's other indoor championship team from Kennett, the ice hockey boys, will begin their title defense with a game at John Stark on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. The team's first home game is Saturday, Dec. 18, at 4:20 p.m. at Ham Arena against Somersworth. Other highlights on the schedule include a title rematch with Bedford on Feb. 7, as well as games with Division III newcomers Alvirne, Pelham, Manchester West and Kearsarge. The team will also scrimmage Berlin on Dec. 8, at 6 p.m. at Ham Arena.

The Kennett boys' basketball team will open the season with a road game at St. Thomas on Friday, Dec. 17, at 6:30 p.m. The team's first home game is Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 6:30 p.m. when Laconia comes to town for a visit. The Eagles will also play host to Merrimack Valley (Jan. 14), Berlin (Jan. 18), Hanover (Feb. 5), Plymouth (Feb. 8), Portsmouth (Feb. 11), Pembroke (Feb. 17) and Coe-Brown (Feb. 22) and will close out the season hosting county rival Kingswood on March 1.

Weather permitting, the Kennett ski jumping team will compete for the first time on Dec. 22 at Proctor Academy. The team's lone home meet of the season is set for Jan. 21.

As they traditionally do, the Kennett and Kingswood alpine ski teams will open the season with a meet at King Pine Ski Area in Madison, weather permitting. That race is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 21. Kennett will host meets on Jan. 7 and Feb. 4 at Cranmore and will also host the girls' state meet on Feb. 10. Kingswood will also host a meet on Jan. 21 at King Pine.

The Kingswood girls' hoop team will get the season under way at home against Carroll County rival Kennett on Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. The girls will play at Kennett on Feb. 1 and will also host Manchester West prior to the holiday break. In addition to the normal regional matchups, the Knights will play Kearsarge, Bishop Brady and Souhegan.

The Knight hockey team will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 15, with a home game against Keene at 6 p.m. at Pop Whalen. The team opens with four home games in a row prior to the holiday break. Other big games on the schedule include Oyster River (Dec. 20 and Jan. 8), Dover (Jan. 12 and Feb. 12) and Bow (Dec. 22 and Feb. 23).

The Kingswood boys' hoop team has only one game prior to the holiday break, as the Knights open with Laconia at home on Monday, Dec. 20, at 6:30 p.m. The Knights will host the traditional rivals from Plymouth, Laconia, Kennett, Coe-Brown, Pembroke and the Seacoast and will also take on Souhegan and Kearsarge.

The Knight cross-country ski team will not open the season until after the calendar turns to January. The Knights will host a meet on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Abenaki Ski Area. Also on the schedule are trips to North Conway, Bedford, Whitefield and Moultonborough.

The first local team to get things going in the regular season is the Prospect Mountain girls' basketball team, which opens the season with a road game on Dec. 3 at Campbell. The girls open the home schedule with a game against Berlin at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 6. The girls also host Winnisquam, Farmington, Somersworth, Bow, Campbell, Inter-Lakes, Gilford and Raymond.

The Timber Wolf boys will open the season on Friday, Dec. 10, at home against White Mountains Regional at 6:30 p.m. The boys will also host Gilford, Raymond, Newfound, Belmont, Farmington, Somersworth and Campbell during the season.

Weather permitting, the Prospect ski team will open the season on Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Blackwater Ski Area at Proctor Academy at 3:45 p.m. The team races at Gunstock on Jan. 20 and Jan. 27.

As of deadline on Monday, indoor track schedules for Kennett and Prospect Mountain had not been submitted.
