Eagle field hockey moves on, Kingswood falls

CARROLL COUNTY — The Kennett field hockey team squeaked by St. Thomas and into the Division II semifinals on Saturday, while the Kingswood stick girls dropped a 3-1 decision to undefeated Bow in their quarterfinal matchup.

Kennett used a first-half goal from Kelsea Allen to get by St. Thomas by a 1-0 score. The Eagles survived a furious St. Thomas rally at the end and will move on to play 14th-seeded Plymouth in the Division II semifinals at 5 p.m. at Exeter High School on Wednesday, Oct. 27.

The Kingswood girls trailed 2-0 at halftime to the Falcons, but scored early in the second half to cut the lead in half, but the Falcons added an insurance goal in the final six minutes of the game to secure the win.

First round

Both the Kennett and Kingswood field hockey teams recorded wins in the first round of the Division II playoffs on Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles, seeded second, easily disposed of 15th-seeded Con-Val by a 4-0 score in North Conway. Abby Gutowski led the way for the Eagles with two goals and an assist. The Eagles will move on to play St. Thomas at home on Saturday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

The Knights, entering the tournament as the eighth seed, hosted Goffstown at The Nick. Kingswood's Miranda Clark scored the game's only goal with seven minutes remaining in the first half to give Kingswood a 1-0 win. The Knights survived a late-game charge by the Grizzlies and hung on for the win. Kingswood will now take on top-seeded and undefeated Bow on Saturday.

The Division II playoffs continue with the semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 5 and 7 p.m. at Exeter High School and the finals taking place at noon on Sunday, Oct. 31, at Bedford High School.
