Looking for an instant pick-me-up, guaranteed to lift you out of today's doldrums? Mt. Washington Valley Theatre Company's production of "The Full Monty" is it.

Based on the popular 1997 British film of the same name, and moved to Buffalo, N.Y., the Broadway musical version tells the story of six unemployed steel workers, low on money, out of luck and lacking self esteem, who come up with a bold, if zany, plan to make some quick cash. They're going to perform a strip show…like the Chippendales…only they're going all the way. The full monty.

Problem is, they're not exactly hunks. In fact, one is fat, two are old, one is skinny…and none of them can dance. But the guys' motivation is great. The leader of the group, Jerry Lukowski, is a divorced father, behind on his child support, who stands to lose custody of his son. The others have their own problems. Harold Nichols, former boss at the steel plant, can't tell his wife he's lost his job. And Dave Bukatinsky, a chubby bear of a man, insecure about his overweight, hasn't made love with his wife in ages.

Does this sound like a lively, cheerful night at the theatre? It is! It's one of the best — and not just because of the ending. The rehearsals for the strip show are hilarious. And, as the guys bond, and rehearse for the big night, they discover renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun.

You'll love the music: a mix of light rockers that may bring the house down, and warm ballads that will have you singing along, laughing and crying. A great show for Girls Night Out…but guys like it, too.

"The Full Monty" is a feel-good musical. Nominated for nine Tony awards, it's rated RX…the perfect prescription for what ails you. So, now through Aug. 14, on stage at Eastern Slope Inn Playhou, six guys will dare to go where few, in North Conway, have gone before.
