Fall sports season is just around the corner

Local football teams begin practices Wednesday

REGION — While summer is still fresh in everyone's mind with the recent spate of beautiful weather, the fall high school sports season is right around the corner and the local teams will be hitting the practice fields and courts in the coming weeks.

At Kingswood, the football team will be beginning practice on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 5:30 p.m. on the school's new turf field, which Athletic Director Andrea Ogden reports is ready to be used. Equipment handout will take place on Monday, Aug. 9, at 6 p.m. at the high school. Players are advised to come to practice dressed appropriately, including cleats, shorts and shirts.

The remainder of the seasons will begin on Monday, Aug. 16, but a coaches' meeting was being held on Aug. 4 to determine exact starting times and places. Look for that information in next week's edition. The Kingswood athletic office can be reached at 569-8100.

At Prospect Mountain, all teams will be beginning the season on Monday, Aug. 16.

The girls' soccer team will be hosting a parent/student meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 9, to get the season under way. Practice begins on Aug. 16 from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

The boys' soccer team has already held a parent/student meeting and the boys will begin practice on Monday, Aug. 16, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The volleyball team will begin its new season with tryouts Aug. 16 through 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Athletes are asked to arrive at 5 p.m.

The Prospect Mountain golf team will open the preseason on Aug. 16 at 3 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

The Prospect cross country team will begin its preseason at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 16, at the school track.

At Kennett, the football team is the first squad to hit the fields. Equipment will be issued on Monday, Aug. 9, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and again on Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 3 to 4 p.m. A parent meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 9, at 6 p.m.

Practice begins at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11. Concerns should be addressed to coach Mike Holderman at 356-4343 extension 4516.

The field hockey team will begin practice on Monday, Aug. 16, and will practice Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 10 a.m. New coach CJ Lang can be reached at 585-750-2479.

Coach Bernie Livingston returns to the cross country team and practice will run from 8 to 9:45 a.m. starting on Monday, Aug. 16. Livingston can be reached at 447-6626.

The golf team will begin play at North Conway Country Club on Monday, Aug. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. Call coach Joe Soraghan at 303-5525 for information.

New boys' soccer coach Mike Jenne will open the season on Monday, Aug. 16, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Jenne can be reached at 315-796-2594.

New girls' soccer coach Jess Sherman will begin her first season at the helm of the varsity program with practice from 5 to 8 p.m. beginning on Monday, Aug. 16. Sherman can be reached at 986-5533.

The mountain biking club will begin practice the first week of school. The spirit squad will begin practice at a date to be determined. Call coach Monica Belkin at 356-7317 for information.

Kennett Middle School will host a parent/athlete sign up for all students interested in playing a fall sport at the school. Parents and athletes should attend on Monday, Aug. 30, at 6 p.m. in the KMS gym. Sports offered during the fall season are football, field hockey, cross country, boys' soccer, girls' soccer and cheerleading.

Kennett's physical policy is as follows: "A perparticipation physical exam for competitive interscholastic sports will be performed within one year of entry into middle school and within one year of entry into senior high school and every other year thereafter. A more recent appraisal of the child's health may be required if deemed necessary, requested by either the school nurse or the athletic director."

All students intending to participate must have proof of a physical examination on file at the school or must give it to the coach before participating.
