Mounties earn berth in Class M semi-finals, 65-60
March 03, 2010
BERLIN — Don Picard's Berlin High School Mountaineers saw an 18-point first half lead evaporate in the fourth period, before they rallied in the waning moments for a 65-60 win over Stevens of Claremont in a Class M quarterfinal basketball tournament game, played before a jam-packed crowd in the BHS gym on Monday night.
The 7th-ranked Cardinals finally caught the #2 Mountaineers at 55-55, and then again at 60-60 with 53 seconds left in the game.
But an inside move and hoop by Jason Mercier with 33 seconds left, followed by a Curtis Arsenault foul shot and two charity tosses by Sam Aldrich, advanced the Mountaineers into an all-North Country semi-final game this Saturday at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester.
The Mounties will clash with "giant killer" White Mts. Regional, the 14th-seed who has advanced with upset road wins over #3 Winnisquam and #6 Somersworth.
The Spartans (11-9) and the Mounties (18-2) split during the regular season.
In the other semi-final at 7:30, three-time champion and top-seeded Conant will clash with #4 Mascoma.
In the Stevens win, Curtis Arsenault had 19 points, with late-game heroes Jason Mercier and Sam Aldrich each contributing ten tallies.
For Stevens, 6' 6" junior Kevin O'Connor registered 25 tallies.
Complete game details and pictures will appear in next week's "Berlin Reporter."
