December 17, 2009BARNSTEAD -- Friends and colleagues were stunned Wednesday
evening by the sudden death of Barnstead Selectman Phil
Grillo at the age of 59.
Grillo reportedly suffered a massive heart attack at his
home on South Barnstead Road some time after 4 p.m. on Dec.
16. His body was found later by his wife, Kathy.
A resident of Barnstead since 2001, Grillo was highly active
in town politics, serving on the planning board and as an
at-large member of the now-defuct fire department study
In April of 2008, he was appointed to serve out the
remainder of close friend Jack O'Neil's term on the board of
selectmen after O'Neil resigned in protest of accusations
that he had mismanaged the town's food pantry and welfare
Grillo was elected to a full three-year term on the board
earlier this year, and was spearheading efforts to design a
new town office building at the time of his death.
