Alton police chief resigns; Heath named as replacement

September 10, 2009
ALTON — Police Chief Phil Smith provided the board of

selectmen during its Sept. 8 meeting with official notice of

his decision to retire on Oct. 1.

Smith, who assumed command of Alton's Police Department in

the fall of 2007, is stepping down after a 25-year career in

law enforcement to accept a position as Atkinson's town

Rather than conduct a full-scale search for Smith's

replacement, the board voted to promote Capt. Ryan Heath

(who currently serves as the department's second-in-command)

as the new chief of police, effective Oct. 1.

Further details will be provided in the Sept. 17 issue of

The Baysider.
