The Compaq Big Band has kept New England swingin' since 1975, with a big band repertoire from the '30s and '40s , as well as the best swing charts from the '50s right up through the hottest big bands of today.

"Were really looking forward to coming to Arts Jubilee and putting on a great concert of jazz and swing on Aug. 6," said Al Saloky, Director of the Compaq Big Band. "The Compaq Big Band will honor the roots of the modern big band with exciting arrangements of instrumental and vocal classics associated with Count Basie, Dianne Schuur, and Ella Fitzgerald, to name just a few. Those selections will be complemented by progressive, high-energy swing, Latin, rock and ballad charts from the great big bands of Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Gordon Goodwin, and more."

This final event is also including an opportunity to honor guest conductor, Dick Donovan, currently a resident at Mineral Springs, a long-time big band musician who had his own band, named The Dick Donovan Big Band, which still plays in the North Shore/Boston area. Dick started the band in 1939 with some of his friends, Paul and Steve, who have been friends since first grade. They broke up to go into the Marines in 1942 in WWII and reunited in 1946. Dick played sax and was the conductor. Be prepared to hear a little "Sunny Side of the Street" when Dick takes the stage.

An early concert by local young jazz enthusiasts is at 6 p.m., featuring two area youth organizations. First, an appearance by the students from Mountain Top Music Jazz Camp in Conway, followed by the Valley's own "Idol Hands," featuring some great bluegrass with Peter Heimlich and friends.

The Big Band takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. As a result of Mother Nature's visit to the symphony pops concert on July 23, the fireworks have been re-scheduled for the conclusion of this Compaq Big Band concert.

The final drawing of Annual Arts Jubilee Raffle, with an RCI week's vacation for four as the featured grand prize will be held this evening. Over 30 prizes will be drawn at this final concert of the summer, including gifts from area restaurants and shops.
