NEW DURHAM — A local police officer found himself a target of violence last week after responding to a domestic disturbance call on Shore Drive.

At approximately 1:15 p.m. on June 10, police arrived at 8 Shore Drive to investigate a report of a domestic assault in progress that involved the male party allegedly attempting to burn the house down.

Upon entering the home, officers found 69-year-old Hermel Desjardins attempting to stab an unidentified female victim with a 15-inch drill bit and a pair of scissors. They also found a small fire in progress on the living room floor.

Sgt. Jason Lamontagne attempted to subdue Desjardins, who stabbed him with the scissors, hitting Lamontagne's ballistic vest. As the two struggled, the victim quickly put out the fire.

Police later learned that Desjardins had inadvertently started the fire by attempting to burn a pile of cash.

After he was finally brought under control, Desjardins was handcuffed and escorted from the residence. He was medically cleared by an ambulance crew who also responded to the scene before being taken to the police department for questioning and, later, transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester for evaluation.

On June 11, the New Durham Police Department formally arrested Desjardins on charges of Resisting Arrest (a Class A Misdemeanor); Simple Assault (a Class A misdemeanor); Criminal Threatening (a Class A Felony); Kidnapping (a Class A Felony); Arson (a Class B Felony); Reckless Conduct with Use of a Deadly Weapon (a Class B Felony); Attempted First Degree Assault with Use of a Deadly Weapon (a Class B Felony); Attempted First Degree Assault (a Class A Felony); and Criminal Mischief (a Class A Misdemeanor).

Desjardins' bail was set at $250,000 cash. He was arraigned by video on June 12.
