SANBORNTON – Celebrating 60 years in operation this season, the Craig family of Den Brae Golf Course in Sanbornton found another reason to throw a party last week after they were awarded a 2019 "Best of the Lakes Region" plaque on June 27 from the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce.

Marketing Director Catherine Craig said the awards are based on public votes for "Best Of" in several categories and she and her family were very excited to be voted the Best Golf Course in the region this year.

Touted as "home of the good deal," she said her family is proud to present "country cub conditions without the attitude" at their challenging nine-hole course with prices that are more affordable as well.

"People often think a nine-hole course will be a bit rough but our course has never been greener and we have one of the best crews around. They do more work on the course by 9 a.m. then most you'll find around here," said Craig.

Den Brae Golf Course has been in the Craig family for three generations now. Catherine Craig said the property, situated off Prescott Rd. in Sanbornton, was originally a dairy farm owned by their grandfather. She and her brother Gordon's dad Edward decided to turn it into a golf course instead and in 1959 Den Brae officially teed off on its new and lasting venture.

The Craig family prides itself not only on their beautiful greens, facilities and surrounding property, but on the friendly atmosphere they provide all of their patrons. They said there are no strangers at their golf course, only people who soon become part of the Den Brae family. Just two weeks ago they all joined together to celebrate one gentleman's 60-year membership at their facility, a relationship that began when the course first opened.

Besides the great prices, atmosphere, grounds, there are cart rentals available, along with a clubhouse that has not only a pro shop but a bar and restaurant that is open to the public seven days a week and can accommodate as many as 70 guests. There are leagues, tournaments for adults as well as youth, and the clubhouse is available for weddings and other events.

Last Friday evening that clubhouse was filled with patrons and community friends who helped the Craig family and their staff celebrate their well-earned recognition with food, drinks, music and dancing.

"We wanted to a night to celebrate with the people who voted and everyone who works here. This was an incredible honor and we really kind of hope to keep it going as a tradition next year," said Craig.
