Boles, Zimmer powered strong Raider squad

BELMONT It was a season to remember for the Belmont High School boys' track and field team.

Behind the veteran leadership provided by a strong contingent of upperclassmen, the Red Raiders tied for 13th at the NHIAA Division III state championship meet with 14 points. In addition, Belmont had two athletes make it all the way to the New England Interscholastic Championships, capping off unbelievable seasons.

With school records and personal bests all over the board this spring, here's a look at how some of the top athletes performed during the big meets.

Joe Boles The senior closed out a remarkable career with an All-State selection this spring... Boles' ride lasted all the way to the New England meet, as he finished ninth in New England in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.22... Was third overall in the 800 at the Meet of Champions, crossing the line in 1:56.44... Was a part of the 4x400 relay team that nabbed 10th place at the MOC (3:34)... Had a sixth place finish at the Division III state meet in the 800 (1:56.29)... Ran a leg for the 4x400 relay team that nabbed a second place finish at states (3:34)... Won the 400 meters at the annual Wilderness League Championship with a time of 51.00 seconds... Ran on the 4x400 relay team that broke through and won the event at Wilderness with a school-record time of 3:33.

Kyle Gelinas The sophomore was also a member of the record-breaking 4x400 relay team, aiding the squad to a 10th place finish at the MOC (3:34), second place at states (3:34) and first place at the Wilderness meet (3:33)... Ran sixth overall in the 1,600 at the D3 state meet, with a time of 4:44... Took fourth place in the 1,600 at Wilderness, scoring four points towards the team total with a time of 4:40... Was second overall at the Bristol Lions meet in the 1,600 (4:46).

Matt Leclair The senior ran the anchor leg on the 4x400 relay team, and his lean at the line at the Wilderness meet secured the victory and school record... Finished 13th at the state meet in the 400 meters with a time of 54.69... Was fifth in the 800 at the Wilderness meet, crossing in 2:06.6 to take two points.

Brennan Malone The sophomore qualified for the Wilderness meet in the 3,200 meters, taking 20th place with a time of 12:01.

Colby Pickowicz The senior also competed in the Wilderness meet, as he nabbed a 19th place finish in the 400 meters (58.40).

Tyler Rolfe The senior rounded out the 4x400 relay quartet that won the Wilderness meet, took second at states and 10th at the MOC... Was also 15th in the 400 at the Wilderness (56.40)... Grabbed ninth place in the same event at the Bristol Lions with a time of 56.70.

Michael Sanborn The sophomore thrower finished 23rd in the shot put at the Wilderness meet (32 feet, three inches) while also taking home 13th in the discus (93-7)... Was 14th in the discus and 24th in the shot put at the Bristol Lions meet.

Bruce Zimmer The junior had a monster year in the shot put, as he joined Boles in the New England Championship at Bridgewater State University (Mass.)... Zimmer was 22nd in the shot put at NE, with his best throw measuring in at 45-7.25... Finished an impressive third overall at the Meet of Champions, throwing a season-best 45-8.75... Took fourth place at the D3 state meet with a toss of 44-8... Won the shot put at the Bristol Lions meet with a heave of 44-6.75.
