Mills impresses in NE debut, wins two matches

March 18, 2014
PROVIDENCE, R.I. Richie Mills showed he fits in quite nicely amongst the best in New England earlier this month.

The Winnisquam Regional High School junior wrestler capped off his outstanding season in fine fashion, competing in the New England Championship in Providence, R.I. on March 7-8. Mills went 2-2 on the day at 170 pounds, representing well for the Granite State.

Mills was the third-ranked wrestler from N.H. in his weight class, and the Division III state champ opened his tournament with a win just 2:47 into his first round match against the top-ranked wrestler from Massachusetts, Nick Hoar of Shawsheen High School.

In the second round, Mills was matched up against Maine's number one wrestler Malik Geiger of Oxford Hills, and once again, the Winnisquam grappler took care of business in a 7-4 decision to improve to 2-0 to start the tourney.

That put Mills into the quarterfinals, and he competed against Connecticut's top-ranked wrestler in Juan Garcia of Danbury High School. Garcia snagged an 11-3 major decision, and he eventually wound up as the runner-up in the weight class.

The loss dropped Mills into the consolation bracket, and he saw his tournament come to an end against Rhode Island's number three wrestler Joshua Noury of Ponaganset High School via a tight 7-5 decision.

North Andover's (Mass.) Brad Drover was the New England champion at 170 pounds, while a pair of New Hampshire grapplers finished on the podium. Keaton Peterson of Manchester Central took fifth place while Dylan Barreiro of Pinkerton was sixth overall.

The Granite State had a pair of winners at the meet, as Jean-Luc Lemieux (Londonderry) won the title at 132 pounds while Joe Chimelski (Nashua North) won the 195 pound class.
