January 21, 2013 LACONIA – Throughout the course of a season, there are several types of games on the schedule. Some are back and forth, down to the wire thrillers. But others are the kind where you need to just take care of business and move on.
That's exactly what the Belmont-Gilford hockey team faced on Jan. 19, as the Bulldogs controlled play from start to finish en route to a 7-1 victory over Kearsarge in Division III action at Laconia Ice Arena.
"We switched up some lines, moved some people around," said B-G coach Jay Londer. "We had a couple defensemen playing forward and things like that. We're trying to get kids ice time but also work on things and develop the program."
B-G (7-2 entering this week) had the highlight of its win come in the second period. Leading 3-0 with 9:04 to play, sophomore Nikolai Fernandez added to the lead thanks to a solid strike from the blue line. Jamie Gill nabbed the assist on the tally.
"The puck came up the boards," began Londer. "It was the same play I tell the kids constantly…get the puck off the wall, pull it to the middle and get a shot. Nikolai did exactly that, got it moved two steps to the middle, dragged it over and put a perfect shot on. The goalie never saw it. It wasn't a bomb, just hard enough to get there."
The goal personified the type of game it was for B-G, as the 'Dogs saw a variety of players step up. Freshman Dylan Treamer scored two goals on the night, while senior defenseman Jeremy Wilson was strong defensively in his most action of the entire season.
"We wanted to get the 'W' but I also wanted kids like Nikolai and Jeremy Wilson playing well out there," Londer said. "We moved two defensemen up to forward and put those two kids at defense. They played every other shift all game. We want to get them experience so they're ready if we need them down the stretch."
B-G got off to a fast start on the night, as freshman Caleb Drouin scored just seven seconds into the first period for a 1-0 lead.
The advantage doubled with 9:21 remaining in the frame, as Treamer scored his first of the night on an assist from Will Mahoney.
Brandon Heimlich scored late in the opening period, with assists from Daryll Cahill and Christian Karagianis making it 3-0 after one.
Senior sniper Jeremy D'Amour scored two goals, one in both the second and third periods, with Fernandez and Treamer also tallying late to account for the 7-1 win. Cahill finished with three assists on the night.
Goalkeeper Calvin Davis made six saves on the night to pick up the victory.
After an early week road trip to Portsmouth, B-G next travels to Souhegan for a showdown on Jan. 26. The Bulldogs' trip to Berlin, which was postponed due to snow last week, has been rescheduled for Jan. 30.
"We'll go there on a Wednesday and it'll end up being a home and home because they come down to us that Saturday," Londer said of Berlin, which entered the week undefeated atop D-III. "That should build a nice little rival. It's really tough to play up in Berlin so we're definitely looking forward to that game."
