TILTON – Sophomore Richard Mills was named the Outstanding Wrestler as Winnisquam Regional High School hosted the Winnisquam Winter Classic on Jan. 5.

Mills outlasted Franklin's Ian Jipson, 10-8, to win the 170-pound weight class, as the Bears finished in third place as a team in the nine-school field. Winnisquam amassed 117 points, behind only Plymouth (219.5) and Concord (131.5).

All told, 12 Winnisquam wrestlers competed on the team, with six of them finishing on the podium. In addition to Mills, seniors Tyler Labonte (heavyweight) and Jesse Duquette (182 pounds) also won their weight classes in a solid showing for the program. Labonte pinned Concord's Jared Boyd in their championship match while Duquette won a 5-3 decision over Pelham's Matthew Blanchard in the 182 pound final.

"The team is continuing to work hard and everyone wrestled tough," said Winnisquam coach Paul Hrycuna. "For a team that is made up of mostly freshmen and first year wrestlers, we are now starting to look and compete as a team that knows how to wrestle. We still have a lot to work on, but today we got a glimpse of our potential."

Freshmen Tyler Swain (113 pounds) and Logan Patten (106) finished in second place in their classes, while sophomore Christian Duquette (152) grabbed third place on the afternoon.
