Ashland Elementary School staff welcome students on first day

September 16, 2020
ASHLAND — After many months of empty classrooms and silent hallways, AES staff were thrilled to welcome students back into the building for the start of the new school year. Students and families were greeted by signs announcing this year's school wide theme, which was "Back To the Future—Learning In A New World." It was quickly obvious to students and staff that this new world of learning, now includes social distancing markers, masks and frequent hand sanitizing.

Associate Principal Kelly Avery said, "I am very pleased with how well the students have done as they face these new classroom challenges. They want to be back at school and are doing their part to keep themselves and their classmates safe."

Classroom teachers have incorporated many outdoor learning opportunities along with frequent mask breaks to help the students adjust to the mask requirement. Bus routes were adjusted to accommodate the new seating limitations. Families who chose remote learning are set up with the technology and materials they need to support their student at home. With all of these measures in place, Ashland Elementary School is successfully meeting the learning needs of all students.

Many thanks to the following community members who provided materials and/or services to make our opening successful-- Stacey Lucas, Veggie Art Girl, for the beautiful hand painted welcome back and theme signs; Deb Perdue, Elaine Hughes Realty for individual bottles of hand sanitizer; and Renee Liebert and her crew from Joyful Earth Gardening, for their work on landscaping the front of the building.
