January 14, 2013 DANBURY — The Newfound ski team hit the slopes of Ragged Mountain on Friday, Jan. 11, for the lone home meet of the year.
And the skiers couldn't have asked for better snow conditions or competition, as some of the top Division III schools were in attendance, including Bow, Bishop Brady and Gilford.
The teams skied two runs of giant slalom in the morning and then returned to the slopes for two more runs of giant slalom in the afternoon.
For the morning runs, the Bear girls skied to sixth place overall, just four points behind fifth-place Belmont. Bow finished first, with Prospect Mountain and Bishop Brady tying for second place.
Senior Tori Markiewicz, the first skier down the slopes, led the way for the Bears with a time of 1:21.17 for the two runs, placing her 20th overall.
Sam Tracy was second for Newfound, finishing with a time of 1:25.31 for 28th place and Megan Geldermann skied to 32nd place in 1:27.88 to finish as the third scorer.
Andrea Markiewicz rounded out the scoring for the Newfound girls, as she placed 35th in a time of 1:29.
Carla Klusman was 45th in 1:34.24 and Livy Schofield was 54th in 1:42.89.
The girls moved up to fifth place for the afternoon runs, with Bow taking top honors and Bishop Brady finishing in second place.
Geldermann led the way for the Bear girls, finishing with a time of 1:16.66 for 12th place overall.
Tori Markiewicz was the second Newfound scorer, placing 17th in 1:22.43, with Kelly Gallagher in 27th place in a time of 1:25.89.
Andrea Markiewicz was again the team's fourth scorer, placing 33rd in 1:29.37.
Tracy was 34th in 1:29.52, Klusman was 45th in 1:35.27 and Schofield was 53rd in 1:42.3.
On the boys' side, the Bears skied to a sixth place finish in the morning runs, with Bow and Bishop Brady taking the top two spots.
Cameron Pigeon led the way for the Newfound boys, finishing in a time of 1:16.33 for 22nd place overall.
Matt Mercado skied to 27th place in a time of 1:17.72 to finish as the second Bear scorer and Keegan Tracy raced to 32nd place in 1:19.29 to place third for the Bears.
Spencer MacDonald was the final scorer for the boys in the morning runs, finishing in 1:21.22 for 40th place.
Evan Collins was 41st in 1:21.79, Shawn Smith was 51st in 1:25.06, Emmett Morrill was 53rd in 1:26.76, Noah Fogg placed 54th in 1:26.83, Sawyer Ellis was 55th in 1:27.5, Zack Gould was 62nd in 1:34.65, Colm Connor was 70th in 1:39.64 and Dillon Delage placed 73rd in 1:40.86.
For the afternoon runs, Newfound was sixth again, with Bow and Gilford taking the top two spots.
Mercado led the way for the boys in the afternoon, finishing in 24th place in a time of 1:18.18.
Collins was the second Bear finisher, placing 32nd in 1:21.04, with MacDonald skiing to 36th in 1:21.95.
Tracy rounded out the scoring for the Bears with a time of 1:22.48, placing him 38th overall.
Fogg was 50th in 1:27.57, Pigeon was 51st in 1:28.45, Smith was 54th in 1:28.94, Ellis placed 56th in 1:29.4, Connor was 64th in 1:37.43, Gould finished 69th in 1:40.04 and Delage was 72nd in 1:42.94.
The Bears will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Mount Sunapee for a 10 a.m. start.
