Sandwich planning modified Halloween events

October 15, 2020
SANDWICH — Halloween activities will take a modified form in Sandwich, though without the selectmen's endorsement and with a lot of caution advised.

A number of local communities will not have trick-or-treating and other regular Halloween activities because of the pandemic, while other communities will be having these events or a version of these events. A number of Halloween activities go on in Sandwich, many sponsored by the town and a number put on by the local community.

This year, the board of selectmen stated that it will not endorse or participate in any Halloween activities.

"The Board thoughtfully considered adaptations to normal activities – with input from public safety, resident, and state/local perspectives – and ultimately agreed community members are safer participating in home activities," the board stated. "We also encourage families to not travel to other communities for trick-or-treating. Some ideas to consider include decorating your home, scavenger hunts, pumpkin carving, and scary movies."

The Parks and Recreation Department will hold a few modified events for Halloween.

An adapted version of the Pumpkin Wall has been scheduled. Starting on Oct. 28people can put their decorated pumpkins on the wall along Remick Park in North Sandwich or on the wall above the tennis court in Quimby Field.

Parks and Rec will also be providing paper bags filled with candy called "Boo Bags" that families can pick up at the Parks and Rec office. The department is looking for any candy donations to put the bags together. This collection will start on Oct. 20 and a bin will be put out at the Parks and Recreation office for donations. Unlike in previous years, candy will not be delivered to people's homes.

The department will also hold a "Freaky Fashion Show" on its Facebook Page. People can email pics of their costumes and Halloween decorations to sandwichrecreation@gmail.com or tag the Sandwich Parks & Recreation Facebook Page.

The town is also giving a number of precautions for trick or treating including not using a communal bowl, not handing candy directly to trick-or-treaters, still using face masks and not substituting them with Halloween masks, and many others.
