Summer resident dies at Bear Island

MEREDITH — A 72-year-old summer resident of Bear Island from England died while swimming off the island's shore.

According to NH Marine Patrol, on Sept. 9 John R. Lawhon, 72, of London, England, was swimming off the shore of Bear Island, where he was a seasonal resident. A family member then saw him struggling in the water. Neighbors were alerted and assisted in getting him out of the water and onto shore, where CPR was performed.

Marine Patrol received the call on the rescue in progress around 7:07 p.m., and Patrol Supervisor David Jones responded to the scene with the Meredith Fire Department.

Lawhon was pronounced dead at the scene after receiving treatment.
