BRISTOL — The Inter-Lakes-Moultonborough football team capitalized on a few gambles by Newfound and spoiled Homecoming for the Bears with a 39-20 win on a warm Saturday afternoon in Bristol.

The first drive of the game saw Chris DeBiase recover a Newfound fumble and get the Lakers a chance to move their own offense. Malik Carter, Andrew Brothers, Evan Candage and Josh Blundo led the way on the ground for the Lakers, while Blundo hit Kodey Converse with the only pass of the drive. Carter burst into the end zone on an eight-yard run with 1:16 to go and after a failed two-point conversion, ILMA took the 6-0 lead with just more than a minute remaining in the first quarter.

Carter didn't let the Bears' second possession last terribly long into the second quarter, as he picked off the second play of the quarter and returned it across midfield for a 34-yard interception return. The Lakers needed just four plays to go the next 41 yards, as Brothers ran the ball in from 28 yards out for the touchdown and a 12-0 lead with 9:35 to go in the first half.

Newfound gambled on the next drive, going for it on fourth and seven, but couldn't convert and ILMA took over at the 42. They drove the ball down the field on runs from Candage, Carter and Converse and a pass to Zach Swanson, but the ball was fumbled inside the 10 and Newfound recovered.

The Bears got the ball out past the 20 and gambled again on fourth down, this time unable to convert on a fourth and two and ILMA got the ball at the 23.

From there, it was just one play, as Brothers ran the ball into the end zone from 23 yards out for the 18-0 score with 1:49 to go in the first half.

Newfound had one more gamble on their next drive, going for it on fourth and three with 15 seconds left on the clock. Brandan Blackey came up with a big stop on the Newfound quarterback and the Lakers got the ball back.

Brothers then made a beautiful catch over an outstretched defender and ran into the end zone for a 44-yard completion and with the extra point from Ryan Kelly, took the 25-0 lead to the halftime break.

ILMA picked up right where they left off in the third quarter, as the first drove ate up more than four minutes of time, with Manson Phu, Carter and Candage leading the charge on the ground. Carter had a key run of 24 yards and from five yards out, Phu barreled his way into the end zone with 7:57 to go in the third for a 33-0 lead, with Carter taking a pitch for the two-point conversion.

After a Newfound punt gave the Bears the ball back, the next drive faltered with a fumble and Newfound took advantage with a touchdown pass with 3:50 to go in the quarter to cut the lead to 33-6.

ILMA needed exactly one offensive play to get the six points back, as Nick Galietta hauled in a pass and ran 28 yards into the end zone for the 39-6 lead with 3:09 to play in the third quarter.

Newfound closed out the third on a drive and scored early in the fourth to cut the lead to 39-14 with 11:27 to go. The Lakers ate up the clock with their next drive, but a fourth down attempt came up short and Newfound used the rest of the clock to net the final touchdown of the day, scoring on a pass from 10 yards out for the 39-20 final.

The Lakers will be at Newport on Saturday, Oct. 4
