Returning talent aplenty for Lakers

MEREDITH The future is bright for the Inter-Lakes High School girls' track and field team.

Behind a solid mix of veterans who will return next season and freshmen who burst onto the scene this spring, the Lakers finished 14th at the NHIAA Division III state championship meet with 10 points earlier this spring. I-L was eighth at the annual Wilderness League championship the week before in Gilford (22 points), and the bulk of the scoring performers in both big meets will be back in the fold for 2015.

Here's a look at how some of the Lakers' top performers fared down the stretch during the spring 2014 season.

Kailee Bennett The freshman made her debut at the state meet, competing on the 4x400 relay team that took 11th place overall... Posted a top 10 finish in the triple jump at the Wilderness meet, taking ninth place with a leap of 28 feet, 3.5 inches... Was 12th in the 1,600 at Wilderness in 6:19... Also ran on the 4x400 relay team there that took ninth place.

Julia Brown The junior qualified in the high jump for the state championship but did not register a height... Took 10th in the event the week before at the Wilderness meet, clearing four feet, four inches.

Maegan Bunnell The freshman ran in both relays at the state meet, taking part in the 4x400 (11th) and 4x100 (17th) races... Took 13th position in the 800 meters at the Wilderness (2:50) and 15th in the 1,600 (6:28)... Ran on the 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams at Wilderness, with both teams taking ninth place... Placed eighth in the 800 meters at the annual Bristol Lions meet.

Courtney Burrell The junior posted an 11th place showing in the 3,200 meters at Wilderness, crossing the line in 14:57... Also ran on the relays there, 4x400 and 4x100 teams both took ninth place.

Lucy Cunningham The freshman qualified and competed in the long jump at Wilderness, taking 19th place with a leap of 10 feet, 3.5 inches... Was 11th in the event at the Bristol Lions (12-1) while nabbing 21st in the 200 meters (33.10).

Natalie Duffield The senior closed out her track career by running on both the 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams at the D-III state meet... Had a busy day at the Wilderness meet, competing in four events... Was 11th in the 200 meters, crossing in 30.10 seconds... Took 14th place in the 100 meters (14.30)... Ran on both ninth place relay squads.

Ella Flanders The freshman scored two points in her first state championship meet, as she finished fifth overall in the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 0.75 inches... Also ran on the 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads... Finished third overall in the triple jump at the Wilderness meet (31-10)... Was eighth in the long jump there (13-3).

Amanda Kurowski The freshman qualified for two individual events at states, competing in both hurdle races... Best finish came in the 300 hurdles, as she was 12th overall in 54.36 seconds... Took 13th in the 100 hurdles (18.72)... Also ran on the 17th place 4x100 relay squad... Was second overall in the 300 hurdles at the Bristol Lions (52.70).

Katherine Miller The junior nabbed 20th place in the discus at the Wilderness meet (65-5)... Had a top 10 at the Bristol Lions in the discus (69-6)... Was 22nd in the shot put there (21-0.25).

Charlotte Morrow The junior competed all the way to the New England Interscholastic Championship, where she finished 21st in the high jump with a top clearance of five feet even... At the Meet of Champions, Morrow finished sixth overall (5-0)... The defending state champ from 2013 placed third overall this year (4-10) while also running on the 4x400 relay at states... Won the high jump at the Wilderness meet (5-0)... Came in second in the high jump at the Bristol Lions meet (5-0).

Jeanne Puglisi The sophomore scored in the high jump at states, placing fifth overall with a clearance of 4-8... Was third overall the week before at the Wilderness meet (4-10)... Took 16th in the long jump at 12-0... Placed fifth in the high jump at the Bristol Lions (4-10).

Hayley Roth The senior ran on the 4x100 relay team at states that finished 17th... Qualified for two individual events at Wilderness, taking 18th in the discus (66-11) and 27th in the shot put (23-10.75)... Also ran on the 4x100 relay there.

Sarah Sundius The senior competed in the javelin at the state championship meet, placing 17th overall with a top throw of 78 feet, six inches... Had a top 10 showing at Wilderness, nabbing eighth place (84-9)... Was 17th in the discus there (67-3) while also competing in the 4x100 relay.
