Smith, Boquist crack top 10 at first Coaches Series race

NORTH CONWAY In the first of two New Hampshire Coaches Series Nordic races, the Moultonborough Academy and Inter-Lakes High School teams performed well in jam-packed fields of racers at Whitaker Woods on Jan. 26.

On the boys' side, I-L finished 11th overall with 225 points, while MA was right behind in 12th place with 233 points. The girls' side saw the Panthers finish 13th overall with 264 points while I-L took 15th place (314 points). Holderness School won both 'A' races.

MA senior Joe Smith was the top local finisher on the day, as the defending state champion finished sixth overall with a time of 13:42 in the classical race. Joining Smith in the top 10 on the boys' side was I-L senior Ryan Boquist, who took eighth overall on the day in 14:15.

MA's TJ Marchand was 53rd overall to help pace the Panthers behind Smith, as he crossed in 17:00. Teammates Ian Bird (83rd, 18:02) and Nick Bennett (100th, 18:49) also finished in the top 100 for coach Jeff Husmann's team.

The Lakers saw five other skiers earn top 100 finishes behind Boquist, led by Ben Crosby's 67th place showing (17:37). John Findlay was 78th overall for I-L (17:57), while Derek Chase (80th, 17:59), Bob Euiler (81st, 18:00) and Trevor Colby (97th, 18:39) all cracked the top 100.

On the girls' side, I-L senior Annie Wilcox broke the 20-minute barrier to finish 34th overall as the highest local finisher (19:57). Teammate Emelia Pendergast was 51st overall (20:58) while Isabel Cunningham took 123rd in 25:06.

MA had six skiers finish in the top 100, led by freshman Emily Blundo's 64th place showing in 21:45. Jerrica Davy was the next skier across the line for the Panthers, as she was 67th on the day in 21:49. Elaine Velie was right behind Davy in 70th place (21:59).

MA's Charlotte Chico finished in 88th place for the Panthers (22:41) while Jasmin Buteau (95th, 22:50) and Gabby Smith (100th, 22:56) also skied well on the day.

The Panthers were also very busy in the middle school race, as Rachel Smith was the top finisher on the girls' side with an 11th place showing (22:27). Cameron Bennett finished 29th overall (22:21) to lead the MA boys' middle school unit.

The second of two NH Coaches Series races (a skate race) will be held on Feb. 9 at White Mountains Regional High School in Whitefield.
