WOLFEBORO — You can imagine the excitement when Kingswood High School photography student Thomas Dougherty, age 15, received word from the New York Times that his photo, taken during a wedding rehearsal in Wolfeboro this July, was the Editor's Pick for a contest seeking hometown photos from high schoolers across the nation.

More than 3,000 teenagers in 45 states participated in "My Hometown." Dougherty's photo leads the selection of 145 photographs published in the online interactive feature, searchable by state and by photographer. Many of the images will be archived at the Library of Congress in the Prints and Photographs Division.

The editors write that the project "was inspired by our belief in the power of photography as an educational tool, and by a desire to help young people communicate the way they see their lives and their communities."

Dougherty, a student of Kingswood photography teacher Mary Ellen Bridges says, "It's all very exciting and I still can't really believe it…The image itself was made in July of last year and was picked out of a hundred or so images that I had put together to go through with my teacher...[We] chose the picture because it represents a piece of America that really is not part of the fast-paced society that most people live in, an image of what family life could and should be like. It's a peaceful, natural, and homely scene."

The photograph was one of a series of shots with his Sony a55 and the use of an f43AM external flash, taken of a wedding over the two days of festivities, including the rehearsal, the ceremony and reception. "This was the first of the weddings I've done," says Dougherty. " I did it alone with the help of one of the family members, since then I've been working as an assistant with a wedding photographer out of Kittery."

The link to Dougherty's Wolfeboro photo and the entire feature showing a cross section of American life is posted on the Governor Wentworth Regional School District website (www.govwentworth.k12.nh.us). Select Our Schools to visit the Kingswood High School site and then select Award Winning Photo.
