ROCHESTER, N.Y. After two seasons as a professional, Gilford native and former Dartmouth College standout Stefan Defregger will continue his soccer life with a new team this season.

The former GHS star signed last week with the Rochester Rhinos (N.Y.) of the United Soccer League (USL), keeping him in the same league he has played the past two years with the Wilmington (N.C.) Hammerheads. The Hammerheads announced they would self-relegate to a lower division for this season, meaning Defregger was left looking for a new team to remain playing at one of the highest levels of professional soccer in the country.

The midfielder made his professional debut in 2015 after finishing his collegiate career at Dartmouth, where he won an Ivy League title his senior season. The knack for the dramatic was something he had honed long before, as Defregger also won a state championship during his senior season at Gilford High School.

Defregger's new team brings him closer to his hometown, where parents Hermann and Cathy still reside. The Rhinos, which went 13-5-12, reaching the conference semifinals last season in the USL, are scheduled to open the 2017 season on April 1 with a road trip to the Bethlehem Steel FC (Penn.). The home opener is set for April 22 against the New York Red Bulls II at the team's home field, Capelli Sport Stadium, which holds a capacity of 13,768 fans.
