August 11, 2014BARNSTABLE, Mass. – For the second year in a row, a pair of Gilford High School field hockey players returned home from Cape Cod with some hardware.
Rising juniors Logan Baxter and Laura Zakorchemny represented the region on the New Hampshire team, and the squad captured the 2014 Cape Cod Classic for the second year in a row. In 2013, the duo was a part of the team from the Granite State that won the Super Sophs tournament on the Cape for soon-to-be sophomores in high school.
The eight-team tournament, which was held Aug. 2-3 at Barnstable High School, saw three squads from Massachusetts (public schools, private schools and Cape Cod) as well as teams from Maine, Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Head coach Carrie Whittemore, who coached the Super Sophs team in 2013 and coaches Baxter and Zakorchemny during the indoor field hockey season, was again at the helm in leading N.H to the title. The team went undefeated in two days worth of action, compiling a 5-0-1 record in their six games at the tournament.
Zakorchemny's older sister Becky, who starred at GHS before graduating this past spring, served as assistant coach for the N.H. team.
Both Laura Zakorchemny and Baxter will serve as huge pieces to Gilford High School head coach Dave Rogacki's puzzle this fall, as the Golden Eagles will look to replace a whopping 10 seniors that graduated off last year's roster that went undefeated and reached the Final Four before falling to eventual state champion Berlin.
