July 14, 2014GILFORD — From Gilford to Spain, for love of the game.
Gilford High School softball players Lisa Osborne and Sarah Lachapelle left earlier this week to embark on a week-long trip to Spain, playing on America's Team New Hampshire softball club touring and playing tournaments in the cities of Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona.
Team New Hampshire is comprised of NHIAA varsity athletes that possess a good attitude, strong academics, excellent character and a passion for the game of softball, according to the America's Team web site.
Osborne graduated from GHS just last month, and the third baseman will be a member of a New Hampshire squad that will be led by head coach Kim Grenon, the Portsmouth High School head coach. Lachapelle makes two Golden Eagles on the roster, and the sophomore pitcher/infielder is fresh off a solid spring season. Windham High School head coach David Hedge is also on the New Hampshire staff and will make the trip to Spain.
Osborne and Lachapelle are the only Division III players on the squad, as the rest of Team New Hampshire is made up of D-I and D-II student-athletes. The team began practicing indoors in December in Portsmouth, and there were several fundraising events to prepare for the trip to Spain. The squad also sold T-shirts and found corporate sponsors to help offset the cost.
The squad was scheduled to leave for Spain on Monday, July 14, and will return to the U.S on Tuesday, July 22.
