GILFORD Hosting its annual paintball biathlon, the Gilford High School nordic ski team put forth quite an effort at Gunstock Mountain last week.

The Golden Eagles had winners in three of the four races competed, as several schools ventured to Gilford for the race on Jan. 28.

Matt Young captured the win in the boys' high school race, as he finished with a time of 12 minutes, 14 seconds. That included one target hit during paintball action, as each target was worth 10 seconds off the final time.

Mark Young and Sander Valpey joined Matt Young in the top five, as Mark Young was fourth overall (13:10, four targets) while Valpey was fifth in 13:17 (one target). Seth Valpey made his way into the top 10 with a ninth place showing (14:09, three targets), while Ryan LaFrance rounded out the team in 13th place with a time of 15:34.

In the high school girls' race, Sophie Czerwinski cruised to a victory for the Eagles, and she added one target hit for her efforts. Maggie Fillion was next for Gilford in 17:40, and she drilled four targets on the afternoon. Becky Zakorchemny wasn't far behind in 11th place, as she crossed in 21:45 with three targets hit. Sister Laura Zakorchemny was next in 12th place, totaling a time of 22:25.

The Gilford middle school team had yet another string of outstanding performances, as the squad captured the first and second slots in the boys' race. Cal Schrupp was the winner, as he hit one target to finish with a time of 15:32. Josh Valentine was the runner-up for Gilford, as he also hit one target and crossed in 15:53.
