JACKSON Behind a pair of top three finishes, the Gilford High School nordic ski team came through with an impressive performance in a skate race held at the Eagle Mountain House and Jackson Touring Center on Jan. 14. White Mountains Regional High School served as the host school for the race.

Matt Young captured the top spot in the boys' race for the Eagles, as he posted a time of 16 minutes, 58 seconds to snag 100 points towards the team total. Mark Young wasn't far behind, as he was third overall with a time of 18:02 (98 points). Sander Valpey was the team's third scorer on the day with 88 points, as he crossed in 13th place overall with a time of 19:23. Rounding out the quartet was Ryan LaFrance, who posted a time of 22:22, good enough for 34th place (74 points).

The boys' team totaled 360 points, which put them in third place on the day behind host White Mountains (371 points) and Kennett (360). The Eagles were well ahead of fourth place Lebanon and Bow, which tied with 325.5 points.

In the girls' race, Gilford had three skiers compete in the varsity race, and the trio combined for 247 points on the afternoon. Leading the way was veteran Sophie Czerwinski, who nabbed a top 10 finish in ninth place with a time of 24:38 (92 points). Maggie Fillion was next for the Eagles, as she crossed in 15th place with a time of 26:05 (86 points). Senior Becky Zakorchemny rounded out the squad, and the newcomer took home 37th place in 29:26 (69 points).

In the Middle School race, Gilford was led by Cal Schrupp's third place showing, as he crossed in 7:03. Teammate Josh Valentine was fifth overall (7:57), and the duo were members of last year's state championship middle school squad along with Mark Young and Valpey.
