WHITEFIELD — The WMRHS girls' soccer team is hoping to have a successful and competitive season this year according to head coach Steve Welch, and it looks like the team is off on the right foot, besting Newfound on Friday by a score of 5-2.

"We're blending a variety of returning players with a new group of incoming freshmen. The squad is focused and excited, and we hope to bring that enthusiasm and intensity to the field," said Welch.

The game started off with Newfound scoring in the third minute off of a goal from forward Molly Lu McKellar. The Spartans bounced with an equalizer in the ninth minute with a goal from Josie DeAngelis, assisted from Olivia Shallow from the edge of the box.

The Spartans took the lead in the 14th minute when Shallow was able to finish a deflected looping shot from DeAngelis. Newfound was able to equalize in the 31st minute again from McKellar. The teams ended the first half tied 2-2.

Welch said, "Second half adjustments created more opportunities for us. Freshman Lila Staley scored her first goal in the 54th minute from an assist from DeAngelis. DeAngelis also provided two more assists for the remaining goals, setting up Shallow in the 73rd minute and freshman Mia Robinson in the 79th minute."

Strong performances from freshman Emma Simpson, junior Kaitlyn Wheeler and senior Abbie Mason helped WMRHS secure the win. Senior keeper Carissa Challinor finished the game in goal with 13 saves.

Welch said looking ahead, "Our overall goal this year is to not only make it to the playoffs, but to advance throughout the rounds. In order for this to happen, we want to have an overall successful home record as well as continue our healthy rivalry with neighboring North Country teams."

This year the team is being led by senior captains Olivia Shallow (forward), Clementine Southworth (midfield) and Carissa Challinor (goalkeeper).

"This group is looking forward to leading our team of returners as well as new incoming freshmen. In addition, the defense will be anchored by Morgan Doolan (senior) and Jaylin Bennett (junior) who hope to continue their partnership in the backline. In addition, juniors Josie DeAngelis (forward) and Maddie Lorenz (midfield) are both looking to have big impacts on the field this season as well," explained Welch.

New to the coaching staff this season is assistant coach Jared Prince.
