March 22, 2018RUMFORD, Maine — Three Spartan Nordic racers ended their season by competing in highly competitive races. The first was the Meet of Champions on March 15, where Leah Dutkewych raced to a third place finish in both the classic and freestyle races. The speedy racer finished the classic race with a time of 13:22. In the freestyle race, she crossed the finish line with a time of 11:21.
Just one day later, Dutkewych, along with her cousin, Sam Call, and Sam Heylinger, headed to Rumford, Maine where they competed in the Eastern High School Championships. This consisted of four races to include a 5k freestyle race, a 7.5k classic race, a 1.2k freestyle sprint and a 4x3.5 k relay. The points from each race are compiled and a final score is given to each racer. Dutkewych placed 61st overall with 192 points.
Call placed 60th overall with 192 points. Heyliger raced strong in both the freestyle and classic races however was not listed in the final results.
Dutkewych said, "I love racing for Team NH because I get to be on a team with people I'm normally trying so hard to beat. I had pretty good races and hope to do well next year."
Heyliger added, "It was really exhausting but a lot of fun to meet the other skiers in our state and ski with other kids from New England. It was very rewarding being surrounded by so many great athletes."
Several of the racers participating at Easterns chose to not race the Meet of Champions to rest up for Easterns. Dutkewych chose to take all of the races head on as they were back to back, making the subsequent Easterns a tad harder on tired legs.
