Spartan wrestlers celebrate seniors

WHITEFIELD — On Feb. 1 the Spartan wrestlers celebrated their graduating seniors. The team beat Pelham High School 66-18, increasing their dual meet record to 8-2. Sophomore Jon Austin scored first for the Spartans with a 10-second pin over Jacen Boyden at 113 pounds. Austin pinned Boyden with a cradle and currently holds a 25-1 record for the season. Junior Luke Beaulieu pinned Owen Haskins in the first period with a half nelson at 145 pounds. At 152 pounds Paul Kleinschrodt pinned Gage Bassett in the second period with a reverse half nelson. Spartan Colton Bradley got his first win of the season by pinning Nick Carol in the second period with a half nelson. Senior Jared Cape pinned Mike Grossman with a half nelson in the first period. Cape is currently 20-5 for the season.

Over the weekend the team placed fourth at the Franklin Twin Rivers Classic. Campbell took first followed by Newport placing second and Concord High taking third place. Cape and Austin both made it to the final round. Cape wrestled at the 170-pound weight class and pinned his way to his final match where he wrestled Con Val's Daniel Curran. Cape lost via major decision, earning second place in the tournament. Cape's season record this year climbs to 22-6. Austin also pinned his way to the finals where he wrestled James Debrow of Mascoma at 113 pounds. Austin pinned Debrow in 31 seconds with an arm bar half-nelson. Austin's season record is now 27-1. At the 106-pound weight class Noah Dutkewych placed third in the tournament by pinning Pardo Sabastian of Concord in 2.41 seconds with a standard arm bar pinning combination. Dutkewych's season record is 16-8. Beaulieu came up with a third place finish at 145 pounds by beating Newport's David Palmer by a close decision 7-5. Beaulieu's current record is 15-8. Kevin Curnane at 195 pounds also placed third at the tournament by pinning Winnisquam's Caden Remillard in a minute and seven seconds. Kleinschrodt at 152 pounds placed fourth, winning three matches before entering the medal rounds. Kleinschrodt lost to Joe Stone of Mascoma 7-4. Chris Girard scored two pins for the Spartans at 285 pounds. Girard currently holds an 11-5 record for the season. At 160 pounds Ed Baez scored a pin for the Spartans and also had a very exciting match with last year's all-state champion Marc Boomhower of Campbell. The first year wrestler threw Boomhower to his back earning four points. Baez put up a good fight against the state champion but later lost via pin. Kaiden Cunnington also scored a technical fall for the Spartans against Newport's Caleb Palmer.

White Mountains last dual meet was Feb. 8 at Newport. The Spartans' dual meet record is 8-2 for the year. The Division III State Meet is Saturday at Winnisquam.
