DALTON — Three days after longtime Town Clerk Sandra "Sandy" York was arrested on Sept. 24 for allegedly stealing $100 or more from the town's daily cash receipts at 4:51 p.m. on Aug. 9, both treasurer Sharon Tupper and her deputy, Sara Martineau, resigned.

In a letter dated Sept. 27, Tupper wrote to the board of selectmen: "Please be advised that effective immediately I am resigning as the Treasurer, Town of Dalton. I can no longer work under the contentious and distrusting atmosphere that has permeated town hall."

At the selectmen's meeting on Oct. 1, chairman Vic St. Cyr read a statement: "The town's selectmen and its staff are moving forward and meeting every task." He also thanked all those "who have stepped up to the plate and given support and offered help to get us through this tough time."

Last week Coös County Assistant County Attorney John McCormick of Lancaster said that Dalton Police Chief Mario Audit had kept him in the loop, but that he expected the town Police Department to prosecute the case since it involves a Class A misdemeanor charge and not a Class B felony.
