Wakefield Food Pantry distributes Thanksgiving meals

November 26, 2020
WAKEFIELD — On Saturday, Nov. 21, a group of 12 volunteers at the Wakefield Food Pantry distributed meals to more than 100 families.

Because of the COVID virus restrictions, the distribution was held outdoors.

This event is held every year, and provides a large frozen turkey and all the typical fixings that are traditional for Thanksgiving. A local resident who wishes to remain anonymous supplies 100 turkeys each year provided by Market Basket.

But this year, the planners for this event were notified one week ahead of time that our usual source grocery chain could not fill our order for all of the food to go with the turkeys.

The volunteer planners had one week to find food for 400-500 people.

A call was placed to Bo Keating, owner/manager of the Poor People's Pub In Sanborville to see if he would be able to source any of the items that we needed. With his restaurant supplier, US Foods, most of the items could be provided and delivered to the Pub for volunteers to pick up and transfer to the pantry.

The Wakefield Food Pantry's Thanksgiving Dinner distribution was saved thanks to the many folks who participated in planning and procuring the food in creative ways.

The next outdoor distribution will be for Christmas dinner on Dec. 19 from noon-2 p.m. in the parking lot at the Wakefield Food Pantry.
