February 21, 2018BERLIN – The Berlin unified hoop team defeated the Belmont Red Raiders 71-32 at the Berlin High School on Feb. 13. It was the last regular season game.
Coed unified basketball gives students with developmental disabilities the opportunity to play in front of their community. The players are assisted by "partners" and scoring is limited to only the players.
The Berlin partners who assisted in the game were Matt and Jon Demers, Nikky Downs and Jenah Arsenault.
At the start of the game, the Berlin Mountaineers got a head start, earning 19 points while the guests earned eight. Berlin was on fire. Mountie star Roger Belanger and Chris Trask each scored three field goals. Randy Belanger had two baskets, Autumn Johnson had a basket and Felix Frechette had a free throw.
In the second quarter, Berlin kept up the momentum, earning 20 more points. The Belmont Red Raiders had their best quarter with 12 points. Roger Belanger had three more field goals, Kolbe Delafontaine also had three, Julia Gray had two and Felix Frechette and Randy Belanger each had a basket. It was 39-20 at the buzzer.
Berlin earned 16 more points in the third quarter and Belmont tallied six. Each Berlin player on the line scored in this quarter. The Belanger brothers tallied six points together. Gray, Frechette, Delafontaine, Johnson and Trask each scored a field goal. Berlin was up 55-26.
In the last quarter, Berlin scored another 16 points and Belmont also matched the last quarter with six points. The Belanger brothers once again tallied six points. Delafontaine had four points. Gray, Frechette and Trask each scored two points.
Berlin is the number one team with eight wins and no losses. They will advance to the NHIAA tournament.
