Astros win Cal Ripken championship

REGION The Cal Ripken baseball 12 and under Astros were two runs behind during the championship game against the Red Sox and came back to win 4-3.

"This team has a huge heart and a never say die attitude," said head coach Duane Johnson.

The Cal Ripken 12 and under league consists of players from Berlin, Gorham and Milan and play their games at Community Field in Berlin and Libby's Field in Gorham.

During the regular season, the Astros had a record of three wins, six losses and three ties. The Red Sox were 6-4-2 and the Dodgers were 5-6-1.

In the playoffs, the Astros were 3-0.

On June 9 under the lights, the Astros faced the Red Sox, who had held the title for two consecutive seasons the Astros denied them a third.

The game featured two great pitching performances from Collin Melanson of the Red Sox and Carter Poulin of the Astros they each pitched a complete game in a well-played exciting six-inning affair.

The Red Sox jumped to a 3-1 lead and held it until the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Astros came to bat in the bottom of the sixth down by two and Jacob Mercier hit a double, sending Carter Poulin and David McLaughlin home to tie the game.

Then, Mercier advanced to third base on a ground out. With Brian Perry Jr. at bat with two outs and two strikes, Mercier stole home uncontested to give the Astros the championship.

"Every kid on the Astros is an MVP," said the coach. "This league would not be possible without the dedication and sacrifices that all the coaches gave.

"A special thank you to the board of directors, led by our President Roger Fecteau," Johnson added.
